14% Crime Drop in Valparaiso in 2012

Valparaiso Police say the city's crime rate dropped by 14-percent last year, compared to 2011 statistics. The data show the department experienced a decreased in major crimes, a category that includes homicide, robbery, burglary, motor vehicle theft and arson. Police say a major element in the decrease was the drop in thefts last year. As for any initiatives for 2013, Sergeant Michael Grennes says the Chief has made it a priority to focus on school safety.

Two Burglary Suspects Die in Crash, 3rd Hospitalized

Two burglary suspects are dead and a third hospitalized after their getaway vehicle crashed and struck two trees in Gary this morning. The Lake County Sheriff's Office reports the deceased were pronounced by the Lake County Coroner's Office staff at 11:10 this morning. Authorities are asking motorists to avoid northbound State Road 49 at County Road 500 North due to a crash. Valparaiso Police Sergeant Michael Grennes says if possible, try to avoid that area until about 2:15 this afternoon. No Cause Yet for Calumet Twp House Fire

Published reports say as many as ten showdogs... champion Shetland Sheepdogs and Chinese crested dogs... are believed to have died in a house fire in the 16-hundred block of Elm Street in Calumet Township Monday night. Fire crews from Lake Ridge, Griffith and Merrillville responded, and authorities say no humans were injured. Officials are still trying to determine the cause.

Indiana State Police Lowell Post say a traffic stop south of the Winamac/Fair Oaks exit in Jasper County sent two people from Chicago and Bolingbrook, Illinois, to jail after the alleged discovery of forty pounds of a substance called “Khat” worth approximately 20-thousand dollars. Report: Many Hoosiers on 'Edge of Financial Disaster'

A new report says more than two in five Indiana residents are “living on the edge of financial disaster”.with nearly no savings to fall back on in the event of an emergency, like job loss or health crisis. Trial Date in Double Homicide Moved

The trial date has been moved from March to September for a 19-year-old Lake County man accused of killing two people at a house just west of Valparaiso last April. The Times today reports the delay was requested by prosecutors. Officials say Julius Garza of Hammond has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder in the deaths of 40-year-old Jeffrey Trinka of Valparaiso and 31-year-old Jennifer Guinn of Hammond.

Gary Man Leads Authorities on Chase

A Gary man is facing numerous charges after leading police on a pursuit today in which alcohol was a factor. Indiana State Police report 43 year old David Serrano was stopped on eastbound I-80, one-and-a-half miles west of Central Avenue, for going 80 in a 55 mile per hour zone, and after pulling the vehicle over, the trooper noticed his vehicle had truck plates on it, and Serrano only had an Indiana I-D card, and later was found to have warrants for his arrest. IDHS Cautioning on Potential for Flooding

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security is cautioning Northwest Indiana residents of the potential for flooding in low lying areas and near creeks. IDHS Director of Emergency Response and Recovery, Arvin Copeland, says while Spring is usually when flooding issues occur, “the recent amounts of heavy rain is putting some Hoosiers at risk...and it is important to use common sense when dealing with flood water and take every measure to stay safe.”

Heat Reportedly Back On at Roosevelt College

The heat was said to be back on at Roosevelt College and Career Academy in Gary. the high school was closed four days in a row due to heating issues, and burst water pipes and flooding. Reports say officials have been alerting parents with updates on the school re-opening through an automated call system, and families not getting word are asked to call the school's office.
