Two Crashes in Valpo, One Involves Squad

Authorities tell us a Valparaiso Police officer responding to a crash this morning was involved in an accident on US 30 this morning. There were injuries reported in the earlier crash, but we don't have information on how serious they may be at this time. Police tell us the officer involved in the other crash was not believed to be hurt, but again authorities are still investigating.

The House voted late last night to accept the Senate 'fiscal cliff' compromise and avoid the tax hikes that were supposed to go into effect yesterday. Apartment Fire in East Chicago

Two firefighters were taken to a local hospital for back injuries after an apartment fire that displaced more than twenty people in East Chicago, as the Times reports fire crews responded to a two-story apartment building in the 48-hundred block of Northcote shortly after 3-o'clock Tuesday afternoon. The report says the fire is believed to have started in a first-floor bedroom, but at last word the cause was not known.

Munster Police say a suspect was in custody pending charges after a homicide. Police say they were called to the 800 block of Boxwood early Tuesday reference to a disturbance. Officers tried to make contact with the subject inside, but authorities say he had barricaded himself and would not respond. The South Shore Civil War Memorial Trail hosted a ceremony this morning honoring a Valparaiso Civil War veteran who would later go on to become Mayor of Valparaiso. City officials say 68 weapons were turned in during a gunback held by the city of Gary Saturday, where churches in Gary again served as drop-off sites. City officials say one assault rifle, four shotguns, twelve rifles, and fifty-one handguns were collected, in exchange for Wal-Mart gift cards.

Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District officials say this past Saturday all South Shore train service was temporarily suspended when a semi-truck loaded with steel rollers lost its load off the Indiana Toll Road and on to the South Shore causing significant track and overhead wire damage. Commuter rail authorities say the accident did not involve any passenger trains but caused a service suspension until emergency repairs could be made. NICTD reports all train service has been suspended for most of the day due to a crash this morning on I-90 involving a semi that reportedly lost its load of steel on the tracks east of the Gary Metro Station. While no passenger trains were involved, there is extensive damage to the overhead wire and track, and South Shore maintenance crews are working to get the issue resolved. Weather Conditions Cause Numerous Indicents

Slippery condition are caused numerous traffic headaches for motorists this morning in the region. Tipsters were reporting multiple vehicle spin outs and crashes all over area roadways, that resulted in some roads being shut down for a time. Indiana State Police report six vehicles collided on I-65 northbound near the Merrillville exit. Authorities report several people were transferred to area hospitals, but that none of the injuries appear to life threatening at this time.

City officials say five churches in Gary will serve as drop-off sites for the city's next Gun Buyback scheduled today from 8am-to-4pm. Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson's office says Wal-Mart Gift Cards will be issued to those who turn in guns: Hand Guns, Shotguns/Rifles: $50.00, and Assault Weapons: $100.00.

Fire South of Kouts Blocking SR 49 Traffic

Authorities were dealing with a reported shed fire this morning just south of Kouts. Porter County dispatch reports State Road 49 is closed to traffic, from East 900 South to north to the Kouts Public Branch Library. Tipsters reporting traffic coming into Porter County from Jasper County on State Road 49 are being detoured away from the scene. No further information is available at this time.
