E Chicago Train Stabbing Suspect in Custody

A 24 year old Gary man accused of attacking a man in the bathroom of the East Chicago South Shore Train Station last month is now in custody at the Lake County Jail. The Times reports Jawaun Woods was recently transported to Lake County after being released from an Indianapolis hospital for injuries received in a stabbing incident there earlier this month. Visclosky 2013 1st District Town Forum Schedule

With 2013 about a couple weeks away, and a new session of Congress just around the corner, local Congressman Pete Visclosky plans to hold more than twenty town forums around the First District next month. Hearing in NW Ind on Enbridge Project

News Release (Indiana Department of Environmental Management): IDEM invites citizens to a public hearing about two Section 401 Water Quality Certifications for Enbridge Energy to place fill materials into waters of the State of Indiana. The hearing will run from 1 to 4 p.m. (local time) on Tuesday, December 18, 2012, in the LaPorte County Library, 904 Indiana Avenue in LaPorte.

Temporary SR 49 Bridge Closure Tuesday

Traffic-Advisory

The Indiana Department of Transportation says the State Road 49 bridge over the Kankakee River will be closed for about three hours Tuesday ( December 18th) between 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., weather permitting, for inspection work. The bridge, which is between State Road 8 in Kouts and State Road 10 in Wheatfield is currently down to one lane with signals directing traffic.

NW Ind Pastor Comfort Dogs in Newtown

Lutheran Church Charities says some northwest Indiana residents have traveled to Connecticut, as part of a team of Lutheran Church Charities K-9 Comfort Dogs and staff, to help residents after the tragedy Friday at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The Lutheran Church Charities website says Pastor Tim Engel and Dan and Karen Fulkerson with K-9 Comfort Dogs, Golden Retrievers Barney and Prince from Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Portage are among those joining their staff team in Newtown.

Valpo PD FOP Lodge 76 Officers of the Year

News Release (Monday Dec 17 2012): Valparaiso Police Department’s F.O.P Lodge 76 yearly presents two officers with awards. The first award is Officer of the Year and the second award is Supervisor of the Year award. Both awards are voted on by F.O.P. Lodge members.

Another Snow Record Falls; Winter Storm Ahead?

As of midnight this morning, the National Weather Service says Chicago surpassed the record for latest first measurable snowfall – a record that was set on December 16, 1965. Measurable snowfall generally means a tenth-of-an-inch or more.

Last week, Chicago broke another snow record – for longest stretch of days between measurable snowfalls at 281. Today looks to be the 288th straight day without measurable snow in the city. The previous record of 280 days was set in 1994.

Gary Man Fatally Shot

In Gary, police are investigating the shooting death of a 25-year-old man Saturday afternoon. The Lake County Coroners office says the victim was identified as Terrel Smith of Gary. Police tell today's Times the shooting occurred near the corner of Second Avenue and Rutledge Street shortly after 1-o'clock.

Fatal Shooting in East Chicago

Lake County Coroners officials say a 32-year-old man died from a gunshot wound early Sunday morning as the result of a homicide in the five-thousand block of Melville Avenue in East Chicago. Authorities identified the victim as Ernest Parker of Hammond. The Times reports the man was struck in a drive-by shooting and that another man was shot, and was treated and released.

Flags at Half Staff in Indiana, US

On Friday, Governor Mitch Daniels directed that flags throughout Indiana and at the State House be lowered to half-staff until sunset on December 18. This is in accordance with a directive from President Barack Obama following the massacre at a Connecticut school on Friday.

Winter Coat Drive Continues

Organizers are reminding people that there still is time to donate to Tri-Creek Lumber and Hardware's 6th Annual Coat Drive, but only through December 29th. Nancy Panozzo of Tri-Creek Lumber says the coat drive started about six years ago "when there was interest from the community."  Panozzo says "someone found out about it and that the need was great at St. Jude's house in Crown Point."  She says then churches in town were contacted and discovered a need there too for warm, winter clothing.

DNR Catches Fisherman Over the Limit

Indiana Conservation Officers cited three Illinois men for keeping over their limit of perch on Lake Michigan. Arturas Barkauskas 40, Arturas Ragauskas 39, and Arnoldas Pelesinas 40, all were cited when they were checked and had 58 perch in their boat. The daily limit is 15 per fishermen which put them 13 fish over the limit. Riley Choate Pleads Guilty

The man who faced a murder charge in the beating death of his son pleaded guilty to multiple charges of neglect and death of his 13-year old son. The Times is reporting that 40-year old Riley Choate, formerly of Gary, plead guilty in Lake Criminal Court on Friday in exchange for a lesser prison sentence. According to the article, police discovered Christian Choate's severely malnourished body in May of 2011 from a shallow grave in a Gary mobile home park.
