Woman Extricated from Vehicle

A Chicago woman was seriously hurt when her vehicle crashed into the back of a semi on I-65 near Hobart around 3:30 Saturday afternoon. A preliminary investigation showed traffic on I-65 northbound was slowing/stopping from an earlier crash north of Ridge Road. A tractor-trailer was stopped in the middle right lane (there are four lanes at this location) with its four way hazard lights on when it was hit by a 1993 GMC Jimmy driven by Melvaughn Thompson, 51 of Chicago. Indiana State Police  say the impact caused Thompson to be trapped inside her vehicle and the Hobart Fire Department responded to use the “jaws of life” to extricate her from the Jimmy. Thompson was taken to North Lake Methodist Hospital in Gary with serious injuries to her head and body. She was wearing her seat belt.
