Tours of Submerged City Scheduled

Tourists can visit an Indiana city, that once was, but is no more, but is now visible again, due to the drought. The Department of Natural Resources has scheduled two supervised tours at Salamonie [salluh-moh'-nee) Reservoir where Monument City once stood. The remains of Monument City became exposed after water levels dropped, and the DNR closed off access to the public last weekend to protect artifacts there. The small community was evacuated and its land submerged in the 1960s when the reservoir was created. The site will reopen for a guided visit this Sunday afternoon (July 29) and again for two-hours on Sunday August fifth.

Interpretive naturalists will be on hand to explain state and federal laws that prohibit collecting anything from the site.

A video report about Monument City can be viewed at the DNR’s YouTube channel.
