More than 25-hundred residents of Northwest Indiana, including 85 breast cancer survivors took part in the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk at Hidden Lake Park in Merrillville Sunday, an event the group says raised more than 200-thousand dollars. The walk was in addition to the Making Strides 5K in Valparaiso on October 7, which the American Cancer Society says raised fifty-thousand dollars and had eleven-hundred participants. The Merrillville walk also served as an enrollment site for the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Prevention Study-3, a longterm research study to help determine genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors that cause or prevent cancer. There are still several opportunities to enroll in Cancer Prevention Study-3 throughout the area until this Friday October 19.
