Crime in Hammond is down six-percent overall from the previous year. Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller reports crime statistics for 2012 show decreases in every major category except robberies, which were up by seven cases; felony assaults, which increased by 141 cases; and arson, of which there were seven more incidents in 2012, then the previous year. Chief Miller reports in 2012, murders fell from 9 in 2011 to six, incidents of rape dropped from 44 to 18, burglaries decreased by 102, auto thefts declined by 115, and thefts diminished by 166.
