Indiana State Senator Glick
News Release/STATEHOUSE (Jan. 14, 2013) – State Sen. Sue Glick (R-LaGrange) today announced she is authoring legislation that would ease the transition process for recent veterans seeking postsecondary education.
Senate Bill 115 would require colleges and universities to establish a “combat to college” program, creating administrative and educational assistance for veteran students.
“Entering college is a major life change for anyone. For returning veterans who are just settling back into civilian life, the transition is even more pronounced,” Glick said. “With the unemployment rate for post-9/11 veterans still above 10 percent, we must do everything we can to help these men and women complete college so they can find success in the workforce.”
Glick said her bill would require each state institution to establish policies to assist veteran students, including:
· Creating a centralized location for admissions, registration and financial administration services.
· Providing reasonable fitness accommodations for disabled veterans.
· Establishing academic guidance, counseling services and job search programs.
· Instituting postsecondary credit for military training.
SB 115 has been referred to the Senate Committee on Education and Career Development for further discussion.
