SELFIE” NAMED WORD OF THE YEAR FOR 2013

Oxford Dictionaries' word of the year for 2013 definitely captures a snapshot of our social-media-obsessed moment.  That's right -- it's "selfie."  In case you don't know what a selfie is, Oxford Dictionaries defines it as: (n.) a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.  It's not a new word -- its origins date to 2002, according to Reuters -- but that doesn't matter. "The Word of the Year need not have been coined within the past 12 months and it does not have to be a word that will stick around for a good length of time," Judy Pearsall, editorial director for Oxford Dictionaries, tells Reuters.  According to Oxford's editors, use of the word has gone up a staggering 17,000% since 2012. During that same time, use of the selfie has probably gone up at least that much among celebrities.  In the past few months alone, arm's-length photos of Mariah Carey, Kim Kardashian, Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Aniston, Nick Jonas and Chris Pratt have all gone viral.  And a British poll in July rated Rihanna the world's best when it comes to taking the self-aimed shot.

SHOULD THERE BE A SEQUEL TO “IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE”?

If there was ever a movie that didn't need a sequel, Frank Capra's It's A Wonderful Life is it.  That isn't stopping a pair of producers from making one, though.  According to Variety, the movie is called It's A Wonderful Life: The Rest of the Story and will feature Karolyn Grimes, the actress who actually played the classic role of George Bailey's (Jimmy Stewart) daughter "Zuzu" in the original film.  Grimes will play an angel who shows George Bailey's grandson, an unlikeable guy, how much better off the world would have been had he never been born.   The film's producers plan on releasing it in theaters during the 2015 holiday season.

SAN FRANCISCO BECOMES GOTHAM CITY FOR 5-YEAR-OLD WITH LEUKEMIA

San Francisco converted itself into Gotham City on Friday for a 5-year-old Batman fan with leukemia.  The effort, kicked off by the Make-A-Wish Foundation, involved many institutions.  The Gotham City Chronicle ran an article bylined Lois Lane (Superman's reporter girlfriend) and headlined "Penguin can't hide from the Batkid. The U.S. Attorney's Office issued a press release that the Riddler and Penguin have been charged with conspiracy and kidnapping and "face long prison sentences thanks to Batkid."  Miles Scott has been battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia since he was 20 months old.  The disease has been in remission since June.  Friday's effort involved at least 12,000 volunteers.  Miles rescued a woman from cable-car tracks and arrested the Riddler, both feats watched by cheering crowds.  Enthusiasm for Batkid spread outside San Francisco. Messages came from members of Congress and from President Obama. "Way to go, Miles.  Way to save Gotham," the president said in a short video.

TURKEY SHORTAGE ALERT - AMERICA'S LARGEST PRODUCER FAILS TO FATTEN UP BIRDS IN TIME FOR THANKSGIVING

America's largest producer of Thanksgiving turkeys has announced a shortage of fresh birds, just as millions of families begin clearing space in their fridge for the holidays.  Butterball said Friday that it had fewer than usual fresh large turkeys because its poultry has had trouble gaining weight on some of the company's farms.  While there are ample supplies of its frozen large varieties, Butterball told retailers, including East Coast grocery chain Big Y Foods Inc., their orders for fresh turkeys 16 pounds and bigger have been cut by 50 percent.  “We experienced a decline in weight gains on some of our farms causing a limited availability of large, fresh turkeys,”
