Born in Northwest Indiana, Laura's a graduate of River Forest High School (home of the Ingots) and got her bachelor's degree from Purdue and a master's from Indiana University [we think she roots for both even when they play each other].
Her work has won several awards from the Indiana Broadcasters Association, Society of Professional Journalists/Indiana Chapter, and Network Indiana. She has also had academic papers selected for presentation at national conferences like the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication and Broadcast Education Association.
Laura watched her share of game shows growing up and one summer while in California, she's chosen to be a contestant on "Sale of the Century". Her TV favorites include The Honeymooners, Project Runway, Seinfeld, The Big Bang Theory, Doctor Who and Star Trek (TNG and the original). She also enjoys crossword puzzles and when asked what some of her favorite places to visit are she says -- office supply stores.

In Westville, this weekend, Marines whose lives were saved by the actions of a fellow Marine from Michigan City will meet for the first time since a deadly explosion in a foxhole in South Vietnam more than forty years ago.
Steve “Swanney” Swanson says Danny Bruce and three fellow Marines were in a foxhole when Bruce caught an explosive device and gave his life to keep the others safe. Swanson also says Bruce's wife gave birth to their first child the very next day. Swanson has put numerous hours into honoring Danny Bruce, who received the Medal of Honor for his act of courage. Swanson tells us one of the Marines has since passed away, but the Marine's daughter is scheduled to come. The ceremony honoring Danny Bruce is Saturday May 26th, 10 am at Prairie Meadow Park in Westville, corner of US 6 and 421, in conjunction with the Birchfield Foundation Softball Tournament, which is named after local hero Josh Birchfield, who lost his life in Afghanistan fighting for our country.
There's much more from my interview with Swanson here at the audio player at my blog.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Valparaiso University says the event was an annular eclipse of the Sun, where the sun is not totally 'covered', leaving an annulus of light showing like a bright ring around the dark moon. The shadow of the total annular eclipse moved from the coast of China, through Japan, across the North Pacific Ocean and through northern California to western Texas. We weren't in the shadow region, so we saw a partial eclipse.
From our location, the partial eclipse started with the Sun low in the western sky, setting as the eclipse was increasing. VU says it was the first annular solar eclipse visible in continental United State since May 10, 1994, and the next one will not be until October 14, 2023. VU also says a total eclipse visible from the US is coming up August 21, 2017.
