Miller Garden Club Mar-Oct

The Miller Garden Club, founded in 1998 and thriving in the Miller Beach community of Gary, Indiana meets on the third Saturday of the month, March through October, from 10am to  11:30am, at the Aquatorium 6918 Oak Ave., Marquette Park, Gary, IN 46403.  Our meetings are open to all and feature speakers of interest on subjects ranging from gardening to the ecology to stewardship of our natural resources.

On April 21 we will have a speaker on the subject of Pruning, Mr. James Hitz. James Hitz has been involved in growing plants since he planted a garden as a youth. He has a Master’s degree specializing in horticulture from Purdue University and teacher certification from Michigan State University. He was the founding executive director at Taltree Arboretum & Gardens. During his tenure there he built the largest oak collection in Indiana along with overseeing the growth and development of many gardens and natural areas.
Currently he is Principal of James E. Hitz LLC, a Horticulture and Landscape Management Consultation firm working with clients throughout northwest Indiana and beyond.

In May we will hold our annual Plant Sale on Saturday the 19th at the Aquatorium starting at 9am until noon.  Loads of plants, really great bargains and super collection of gardening art, tools, accessories and more.

Our biggest and best event starts on Saturday, July 14 and continues on Sunday July 15, from  10 am to 3pm:  our annual Secret Gardens Walk.  The theme for our 13th annual event this year is  "Flower Beds, Bird Baths and Beyond."  The tour will feature nine Miller area gardens and will begin at the Aquatorium.  A box lunch will be available for a cost of $10.  Bus transportation is provided from 10am to 2:30pm with ample parking available at the Aquatorium lot.  A bike tour is also offered at 10:30am Saturday morning. Also featured are vendors offering garden-related products and artwork, plus fresh plants for sale.  A raffle will give guests a chance to win a beautiful bird bath and other fine prizes.  Tickets for the tour are $8  and are available at neighborhood businesses:  Marquette Perk coffee shop in the Miller Beach area, corner of Locust and Shelby, Ayers Realty and Lake Street Gallery, both businesses in the Lake Street business district, and from all Miller Garden Club members.

On October 20, following our monthly meeting,  we will hold our annual "Bulbs and Brats" event featuring fine "ready to plant" bulbs of all varieties, the best quality bulbs available.  Also enjoy a hot, meaty bratwurst sandwich, drink and variety of desserts, plus great music from a local band.  This is a fun event and not to be missed!
