As of 3/7/2014, the waters surrounding the MC Lighthouse Pier & harbor are still ice covered.
For the most part, area tribs are free from ice except in areas of slack water.
Water temp was 32° F.
Just a reminder to all anglers fishing Trail Cr: No fishing is allowed within 100' upstream of the Trail Cr Sea Lamprey Barrier or downstream to the Pottawatomie CC Golf Course property line located adjacent to Springland Ave in MC.
Members of the pacific salmon family, the chinook or king salmon and the coho salmon can be found in Lake Michigan and its tributaries in northern Indiana. Pacific salmons do not feed during spawning, but will strike a lure during their runs. Cohos will spawn in the fall in their third year of life and die, while chinooks will spawn in the fall, winter or spring in the fifth year of life, allowing them to grow larger. The teeth of the coho salmon are set in light color gums. The coho salmon has black spots on the upper lobe of a slightly forked caudal fin with 12-15 anal fin rays.
Bait: Spawn sacs
Depth: Just off the bottom
Several limits of coho salmon were caught by anglers this past week fishing the lower reaches of Trail Cr. The top producing bait was spawn sacs fished just off the bottom. Coho were averaging 16 inches.
Rainbow or steelhead trout
Ever popular among Indiana anglers is the trout family, which includes the brown, lake and rainbow or steelhead trout. Many fisherman can be spotted on the shores during spawning season when the trout begin their runs into the tributaries. Rainbow or steelhead trout have a white mouth, teeth and gums and small black spots on their backs, sides, and caudal and dorsal fins. The caudal fin margin of the rainbow or steelhead trout is square and the fish has 9-12 anal fin rays.
Bait: Spawn sacs, small jigs tipped with a waxworm or two
Depth: Deepest holes
Despite the 32° F water temps in Indiana's tribs to LM, anglers braving the elements have been rewarded with decent catches of STT over the past couple of weeks. Anglers fishing Trail Cr report the majority of the action is occurring in the middle/ upper reaches, but over the last week, the lower reaches started to produce. Over on the western creeks, anglers have caught a few in the lower portions of the E Br Little Cal. Salt Cr anglers have stated that fishing has been slow due to shelf ice. As for baits, spawns sacs fished in the deepest/ slowest pools have provided the most consistent action. Small jigs tipped with a waxworm or two have also produced fish in the creeks.
A 12-year-old boy caught a record 114.1-pound catfish in the Mississippi River in Louisiana.
Lawson Boyte, of Oak Grove, La., was on a family fishing trip on the river when he caught the huge catfish using shad bait.
The fish broke the previous record of 110.19 pounds in 2005.
