The intended landing spot was the Porter County Regional Airport, within a mile away. Yet, severe engine problems caused a World War II era small plane to choose the southbound lanes of SR-49, the Valparaiso bypass, just north of the SR-2 exit. Kyle Kuebler, Director of the Porter County Regional Airport told Northwest Indiana's Newsroom that the plane, a 1943 Taylorcraft, executed a textbook perfect forced landing. Kuebler credits the seasoned pilot's experience as the reason that the pilot and his passenger walked away without any injuries or damage to the plane.
