Shortly before 5:30 this morning CDT the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana issued a Flash Flood Warning that includes LaPorte County and several other counties in north-central Indiana. The warning was in effect until 8:15 am CDT. At 518 am CDT, National Weather Service Doppler Radar indicated very heavy rain from a thunderstorm 3 miles east of Hesston...or 12 miles northeast of LaPorte...moving east at 30 mph.
Meteorologists say excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small creeks and streams...highways and underpasses. additionally...country roads and farmlands along the banks of creeks...streams and other low lying areas are subject to flooding.
Officials say most flood related deaths occur in automobiles, and they urge motorists to not attempt to cross water covered bridges...dips... or low water crossings, and never try to cross a flowing stream... even a small one...on foot.
