Four years ago Portage Detective Corporal Janis Regnier began looking for leads in a decades-old missing persons case. Thanks to a relatively new DNA database at the University of North Texas on unidentified human remains, police today announced they now know someone took the life of 21-year-old Kimberly Wuerthele within a month of her disappearance in Chicago back in February of 1982. Public Information Officer Sgt. keith Hughes says a DNA match has determined an unidentified female homicide victim found washed ashore on Lake Erie in an area between Detroit and Toledo, Ohio, in March of 1982 was Wuerthele, from Portage, Indiana. Police in Monroe County Michigan are asking for help from anyone who may have information on the victim's disappearance. Sgt. Hughes says there are still several unsolved cases out there, and the database gives new hope not just to law enforcement but also family members who have loved ones who are still missing.
