Next month, you can get an up-close look at the House of Tomorrow and four other historic homes from the 1933 Chicago World's Fair that reside in northwest Indiana. A National Park ranger at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore will provide a one-hour-fifteen-minute guided tour of each home October 20th, and reservations are being taken starting today at 8am Central Daylight Time at www.dunesnationalpark.org .[[ Monday September 10th ]].
The original 1933 “Century of Progress” houses featured innovative building materials, modern home appliances, and new construction techniques for the time. They were moved to northwest Indiana in 1935 to promote a new housing community -known as Beverly Shores- and were included in the national lakeshore boundary in the early 1970’s.
Reservations are required and there is a $15 per person fee to cover the cost of shuttle buses between the parking lot and the houses. There is no on-site parking available. The other homes are the Cypress Log House, Florida Tropical House, Armco-Ferro House, and the Rostone House.
