Hammond Officer in Stable Condition After Shooting

A 34 year old Hammond Police Officer is in stable condition at last check with non life-threatening injuries after he was shot three-times in the leg at the scene of a bank robbery this morning. Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller says the officer was the first to arrive at the BMO Harris Bank, located on the 73-hundredth block of Indianapolis Boulevard, just before 11 this morning. Chief Miller says almost immediately upon the officer's arrival, two male suspects exited the bank and fired eight shots at the officer, and fled the scene. A citizen reportedly followed the suspect's getaway vehicle, and with the description provided, officers, with the help of Gary Police, were able to apprehend them around 8th Avenue and Hovey Street. Chief Miller says two guns and money taken from the bank were recovered, and the case is being turned over to the U-S Attorney's Office for charges.
