For immediate release: 1-12-2013 11:30 a.m.
On Friday (1-11-2013), at approximately 7:59 p.m., the Laporte County regional dispatch center (911) received a call from a homeowner that their home in the 100 block of Pontiac Drive in Pottawattomie Park was being burglarized. Officers from Michigan City Police, Laporte County Sheriff’s Office and Pottawattomie Park Police were sent to the residence. While on the way, the RDC (911) advised that gun shots had been fired.
Michigan City Police Officers were the first to arrive at the home. They found a male homeowner holding one of the suspects at gunpoint inside of his home. The male homeowner reported that the second suspect had fled the home just prior to Michigan City Police arriving. The homeowner indicated to MCPD Officers that the second suspect had sustained a gunshot wound. Laporte County EMS tended to the suspect that remained in the home. Officers from all jurisdictions began searching for the second wounded suspect that had fled on foot.
Minutes later, RDC (911) notified officers that the second suspect was in a home in the 300 block of Hobart Street and that he required medical attention for gunshot wounds. Police Officers from Michigan City Police, Laporte County Sheriff’s Office, Trail Creek Police and Long Beach Police converged on the home. The home was surrounded and after a few minutes passed, Michigan City Police Chief Mark Swistek and Sheriff Mike Mollenhauer convinced an occupant in the home to open the door. The wounded suspect was located hiding in a closet in the home. He received immediate medical attention from Laporte County EMS. Both suspects were transported to St. Anthony Franciscan Emergency Room in Michigan City. Both suspects were later flown to another area hospital for further treatment. Both men are adults are in stable condition at this time.
As of this time, the case is still under investigation by the Pottawattomie Park Police, Laporte County Sheriff’s Office and LaPorte County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. No official charges have been filed in the case as of this point. More details will be released late Monday Afternoon after a Probable Cause Hearing in a Laporte County Court.
