Fire crews were still on scene in downtown Valparaiso today where a century-old building once stood before being consumed by fire overnight early Monday. Many streets around the fire scene, including Lincolnway and Michigan, were still closed. The fire department continues to look into the cause. What was left of the two-story brick building –basically, the outside walls – were torn down for safety reasons Monday afternoon. The structure housed a number of shops and offices, including a barber shop and mortgage firm. One firefighter was checked at the hospital for smoke inhalation and released.
