Brothers May Be Freed 25 Years After Murder Two Detroit brothers whose murder convictions were overturned after 25 years will not be released from jail — at least for now. In 1987, Robert Karey, an elderly marijuana dealer, was murdered at the back door of his Detroit home. Two brothers, Raymond and Thomas Highers, both now 46, were convicted of the killing, but after 10 new witnesses testified on behalf of the brothers at a hearing in March, a judge tossed out their convictions.
