Information regarding a potential drug deal in the area of U.S. 6 in Portage lead to the arrest of two Portage men. The Times reports two 35 year old Portage men were ultimately arrested and charged with dealing and possession of cocaine, after police individually stopped each vehicle leaving a local restaurant were the alleged drug deal occurred.

A Michigan City man was sentenced to five-years in prison today for a felony burglary conviction. The LaPorte County Prosecuting Attorney's Office reports Brad Kuta pleaded guilty to burglary for breaking and entering with intent to commit burglary, on or about June 28th of 2011.

The owner of Richie's Mini Mart in Lansing, Illinois, is facing drug and weapon charges following an investigation into complaints the store was allegedly selling synthetic marijuana. The southbound on-ramp to Indianapolis Blvd. from westbound I-80/94 remains closed at this time as a much bigger wrecker was sent to the scene to assist in lifting the truck back onto it's wheels.

The red wrecker was sent in to replace another blue wrecker that was not heavy enough to perform the task of uprighting the overturned truck on the westbound I-80/94 on-ramp to southbound Indianapolis Blvd.

Shortly after 11 o'clock this morning a semi, apparently being driven too fast on the ramp, flipped over on the westbound I-80/94 exit ramp to southbound Indianapolis Blvd. While causing some back-up on westbound Borman to the exit ramp, the sight of an overturned truck on the exit ramp caused some onlooker slow downs. Two heavy duty wreckers were still on the scene as of 1:30 p.m. this afternoon to upright the trailer.

In Hammond Federal Court today, nwi-dot-com is reporting Thomas Philpot has been sentenced to eighteen-months in prison for paying himself more than 24-thousand dollars in bonuses from federal child support incentive funds while he was Lake County Clerk. Philpot, who also served ten-years as Lake County Coroner, has reportedly been ordered to surrender to federal authorities on April third. He was convicted last August.

INDOT reports the ramp of westbound I-80/94 is closed near Indianapolis Boulevard due to a crash. The Indiana Department of Transportation is advising motorists to seek alternate routes as you travel westbound on I-80/94 near mile 2.0.

The Indiana Senate has unanimously passed a measure meant to show gratitude to Purple Heart veterans in the Hoosier state. The bill allows owners of a Purple Heart license plate to park in a metered space without fee for parking, or penalty for overtime parking. The legislation is co-sponsored in the House by Valparaiso State Representative Ed Soliday.

A measure addressing chronic absenteeism in Hoosier schools is on its way to the full Senate. Senate Bill 338 would require school corporations to determine contributing factors to absenteeism and establish plans to address the issue. It also provides a 95-percent attendance rate requirement for students to get a graduation waiver.

Critics of Senate Bill 373, including the Humane Society of the United States, say undercover videos expose wrongdoing like inhumane treatment of farm animals and unsafe conditions. Legislation that was moving through the Indiana House to merge the Hammond Library with the Lake County Library system has been removed and the measure, sponsored by Munster State Representative Mara Candelaria-Reardon, now instead would have a legislative study committee meet this summer to review the issue of library consolidation. A 22 year old Portage man was sentenced today in a fatal hit-and run that resulted in the death of 22 year old Frank Ivey, of South Haven. The Times reports Reinaldo Figueroa III was sentenced to six-years in prison, with the judge suspending three-years, so with good behavior, they calculate he could serve just 18-months.
