Lansing Store Owner Charged with Selling Spice

The owner of Richie's Mini Mart in Lansing, Illinois, is facing drug and weapon charges following an investigation into complaints the store was allegedly selling synthetic marijuana. The Lansing Police Department reports 47 year old Rashad Shatat, of St. John, Indiana, was arrested during the execution of a search warrant at the business last week, which resulted in the seizure of over ten-thousand grams of suspected synthetic marijuana, otherwise known as K-2 or Spice, along with numerous...

A Bigger Wrecker Needed to Upright Truck

The southbound on-ramp to Indianapolis Blvd. from westbound I-80/94 remains closed at this time as a much bigger wrecker was sent to the scene to assist in lifting the truck back onto it's wheels.

The red wrecker was sent in to replace another blue wrecker that was not heavy enough to perform the task of uprighting the overturned truck on the westbound I-80/94 on-ramp to southbound Indianapolis Blvd.

Overturned Semi Closes Ramp to SB Indinapolis Blvd.

Shortly after 11 o'clock this morning a semi, apparently being driven too fast on the ramp, flipped over on the westbound I-80/94 exit ramp to southbound Indianapolis Blvd.   While causing some back-up on westbound Borman to the exit ramp, the sight of an overturned truck on the exit ramp caused some onlooker slow downs.  Two heavy duty wreckers were still on the scene as of 1:30 p.m. this afternoon to upright the trailer.

Philpot Sentenced to 18 Months in Prison

In Hammond Federal Court today, nwi-dot-com is reporting Thomas Philpot has been sentenced to eighteen-months in prison for paying himself more than 24-thousand dollars in bonuses from federal child support incentive funds while he was Lake County Clerk. Philpot, who also served ten-years as Lake County Coroner, has reportedly been ordered to surrender to federal authorities on April third. He was convicted last August.

The Indiana Senate has unanimously passed a measure meant to show gratitude to Purple Heart veterans in the Hoosier state. The bill allows owners of a Purple Heart license plate to park in a metered space without fee for parking, or penalty for overtime parking. Bill Reinstates In-State Rate for Some Students

Lawmakers are considering a bill to reinstate the in-state rate for some college students in Indiana. Gary State Senator Earline Rogers says she wants to help students who had to put their education on hold due to an immigration bill approved a couple years ago. Senate Bill 207 restores in-state tuition for children of undocumented immigrants who were initially enrolled at that rate on or before July 1, 2011.

Two Arrested After Overnight Pursuit

Indiana State Police say a 26-year-old LaPorte man who was allegedly driving at a high rate of speed tried to evade arrest by driving through a WalMart parking lot in Michigan City early this morning, then fleeing on foot into a wooded area before being arrested. School Absenteeism Addressed in Senate Bill

A measure addressing chronic absenteeism in Hoosier schools is on its way to the full Senate. Senate Bill 338 would require school corporations to determine contributing factors to absenteeism and establish plans to address the issue. It also provides a 95-percent attendance rate requirement for students to get a graduation waiver.
