No Committee Vote Yet on Gay Marriage Ban

An Indiana House committee this week heard hours of testimony on the proposed amendment to ban gay marriage, and the panel could take a vote next week. The next regular meeting for the House Judiciary Committee is Monday.  The proposed ban on same-sex marriage was filed in the Indiana House of Representatives last Thursday and is now known officially as House Joint Resolution 3. An amendment has to be approved by two separately-elected General Assemblies, and then by Hoosier voters in a referendum, in order to become part of the state's Constitution. The gay marriage ban was approved by state lawmakers in 2011, and if approved this session, would go before Indiana voters this November.
