Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is May 10

mail truck food drive

Letter carriers across the Region and around the state will be picking up more than mail this Saturday {May 10} – they'll also be collecting nonperishable food items from customers on their routes to be delivered to local food banks as part of the 22nd annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive, the largest one-day food drive in the nation.  Led by letter carriers represented by the National Association of Letter Carriers (AFL-CIO), with help from rural letter carriers, other postal employees and other volunteers, the drive has delivered more than one billion pounds of food the past 20 years. Carriers collect non-perishable food donations left by mailboxes and in post offices and deliver them to local community food banks, pantries and shelters. Nearly 1,500 NALC branches in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands are involved.   Ollie Brown, coordinator of the event in the greater Indianapolis area, says Hoosiers can leave a sturdy bag of staples like canned vegetables, rice, or cereal next to their mailbox before their regular mail delivery time.   [Photo courtesy U.S. Postal Service]
