Registration is underway for a free, community-wide event later this month to explore the issues of around underage drinking and heroin use/abuse. Beatrice Owen, Director of the Porter County Substance Abuse Council, told the Region News Team during a recent Region News Makers interview that the number one problem, across the board for both adults and children in Porter County, is alcohol. Owen says we need to step away from the idea that alcohol is a “right of passage” for children and the younger children start using alcohol, the more damage is done to their brain.

“Let's Talk: A Community Conversation” will be held on May 21st at WaterBird Banquet and Conference Center in Chesterton. Attendees are asked to register at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
