Westville Correctional Facility Holds Annual Disaster Drill

The Westville Correctional Facility on Monday held its annual disaster drill in conjunction with local emergency response teams. Superintendent Mark Levenhagen told the Region News Team the drill, which this year involved a suspicious package at the main gate that exploded resulting in mock injuries and wounds, and an evacuation of uninjured inmates and staff in the area to be evacuated, went very well. He says the primary reason for the drill is for their readiness, but secondarily, it gives those agencies who could be relied upon to assist them a chance to get to know the facility and its layout.

Levenhagen says more agencies were involved in this drill than in years past and while everything went well there is always room for improvement, especially when it comes to communications because everyone uses a different radio frequencies and systems.

He says after the drill, each agency involved told them what went well for them, what did not and why, and a report is sent out to each agency involved so everyone can benefit from it.
