Board Votes to Close Six Gary Schools

The Gary School Board Tuesday voted to close about a third of their schools, including Lew Wallace STEM Academy, formerly Lew Wallace High School in the city's Glen Park neighborhood, as the district heads toward the 2014 academic year with a more than twenty-million dollar budget deficit. Board members voted four-to-two to also shutter Webster, Brunswick and Watson elementaries, Dunbar-Pulaski Middle School, and the Lincoln Achievement Center, which houses some special needs students. Bailly Elementary, which hasn't been open for months due to damage from the severe weather, is slated to remain open as school officials are hopeful federal FEMA funds will be enough to make repairs.
