DCS Releases 2012 Child Fatality Report

The Counties of Lake, Porter and La Porte share a shocking statistic, each county has lost a child through abuse or neglect, according to the the Department of Child Services most recent child fatality report.  The 2012 report shows that six fewer kids died the previous reporting year, but between July 1, 2011 and June 30th 2012, four children of the 34 reported killed in the state, died in Northwest Indiana.

While the DCS report does not list the names or hometowns of those who perish it does detail the cause and how each child died, with most children succumbing to fatal head trauma. The report also shows that 60% of the fatally abused children were younger than one year old.  Of the neglect cases, a little more 63% never reached their first birthday.  The report found that low income households tops the list of risk factors for half of the deaths, followed by substance abuse and domestic violence with the perpetrator being a biological parent or the parent's partner 85-percent of the time.
