Mulch/Pallet Fire in Valpo Contained But Still Burning

A mulch and pallet fire Sunday afternoon is contained but continues to burn this morning. Valparaiso Fire Department Battalion Chief Les Abraham told the Region News Team they received the call around 2:50pm for the fire which was located behind a business on US 30, in the 900 block of Morthland Drive. He says the cause of the fire was more than likely a result of the mulch spontaneously combusting, as it was not properly moved, and as the heat built up the wind probably blew embers into the pallets which caught fire. A private excavating company is at the scene moving debris around so fire crews can get to the fire.

Abraham says the hope is to have the fire out by later this afternoon and the mulch fire out by tomorrow. No injuries were reported and the business was closed at the time of the fire. He says Sturdy Road had to be shutdown for a time late Sunday afternoon into the early evening for tanker shuttles.
