A La Porte juvenile is facing a weapons charge after police investigate suspicious activity in a La Porte neighborhood early Thursday morning. According to reports, at around 3 am, La Porte Police responded to a report of a subject attempting to enter vehicles near Central Ave./Weller Ave. A resident who reportedly saw someone walk out their driveway believed that person was entering vehicles and contacted a neighbor, a retied police officer who then checked the area and saw the suspect, a juvenile, approach some vehicles on Fairfield Ave. The retired officer, who stopped and detained the teen, told dispatch he didn't see any property on the suspect but did notice a dome light on inside one vehicle. Upon arrival police found the juvenile near a fence line and took the teen to Juvenile Services Center on a curfew violation. Officers went back to the area and located the owner of a vehicle that had reported an item had been stolen from inside it then officers returned to the fence line and discovered a handgun laying on some nearby mulch. According to police the suspect admitted to police and his mother that he had the gun for protection and it had not been reported stolen at the time of the incident. After further investigation, the teen was additionally charged with dangerous possession of a firearm (by a child), a Class A misdemeanor.
