State Ordered to Recognize Gay Marriage of Munster Couple

An emergency request has been granted by a federal appeals court on behalf of two Lake County women, asking that their same-sex marriage continue to be recognized by the state while the courts continue to debate Indiana's prohibition of gay marriage. In May, a federal judge granted a preliminary injunction extending a temporary restraining order preventing the state from enforcing the ban on Niki Quasney, who is fighting advanced ovarian cancer, and Amy Sandler of Munster. The 37-year-old women have been together for over a decade and were married in Massachusetts last year. Last week, a federal judge ruled Indiana's ban on gay marriage was unconstitutional, and two days later, the U-S 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago issued a stay requested by the Indiana Attorney General's Office as the state appeals.
