Indiana 9th in Nation for Opioid Prescribing Rates

A Vital Signs report released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found Indiana ranks 9th out of 50 states when it comes to the prescribing rates per 100 persons for opioid pain relievers. Beatrice Owen, Director of the Porter County Substance Abuse Council, says Indiana has been addressing the prescription medication issue for a couple of years and urges residents to visit http://www.in.gov/bitterpill/. During a recent Region News Makers interview, Owen said Porter County residents are encouraged to dispose of their medications properly at the prescription medication drop-off boxes, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at five different locations in the county, at the Chesterton, Hebron, Porter, Portage, and Valparaiso police departments.

According to the study, Alabama had the highest number of healthcare providers prescribing opioids, while Hawaii was found to be the lowest prescribing state.
