In order to prevent a summer blood shortage, the American Red Cross is urging eligible blood donors to roll up their sleeve and give the gift of life. Indiana-Ohio Red Cross Communication Manager Vince Robinson told the Region News Team that on average during the summer months, about two fewer donors make an appointment to give blood at each blood drive, which can add up to more than 100-thousand fewer donations during the summer. He says school being out and folks on vacation are contributing factors to that drop off, and when you match that with the fact that the constant need, as every three seconds someone needs blood, that is why they are appealing to regular and new donors.
Blood and platelet donations are needed every day for patients with many serious medical conditions. Accident and burn victims, heart surgery patients, organ transplant patients, and those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease may all need blood.
