Former Hammond Pastor Seeking Reduced Sentence

The imprisoned former leader of First Baptist Church of Hammond, Jack Schaap, is contending he would not have pleaded guilty in 2012 to interstate transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity if he was aware of the ten-year minimum sentence. Schaap, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison, has filed to have his sentence vacated and claims his attorney provided ineffective counsel because he thought the maximum he would receive would be ten-years. Federal prosecutors however state he testified under oath that no one had made him any promises regarding his sentence.
