Indiana conservation officers are taking part in the National “Operation Dry Water” campaign today//Friday thru Sunday. Conservation officer Lt. Bill Browne says thousands of people boat safely In Hoosier waters each year without incident, but when boating accidents do happen, alcohol is often involved.
“We want to see everyone have a great time while boating,” said Browne. “Being safe and sober is the first step to ensuring that your boating experience has the fun and relaxing result you are looking for."
The effort this weekend to meant to heighten awareness of the dangers of boating while intoxicated. Last year, Indiana conservation officers arrested 178 people for boating while intoxicated. The Indiana DNR also says alcohol was a contributing factor in 63 of 75 boating accidents recorded in the Hoosier state in 2011. [lw]
