Man Killed by Fireworks, Another Injured

Published reports say a 26-year-old Lowell man was fatally-injured Wednesday night in a fireworks-related accident outside his home on Jansen Court . The man, identified as Nicholas Saberniak, was taken to a local hospital then airlifted to a Chicago-area hospital where he died. Reports say the man was dropping fireworks into a homemade mortar-type tube when one went off prematurely and hit him in the face.

In neighboring Cedar Lake that same night, the town's fire department responded to a medical emergency call involving fireworks. Here is the news release from Assistant Fire Chief Nick Mager:
On July 4, 2012 the Cedar Lake Fire Department responded to a medical emergency call that involved the use of fireworks. Emergency personnel found a 23 year old male critically injured by fireworks that he was using. Patient was transported to St. Anthony’s Medical Center where he was later air lifted to a Medical Center in Chicago. There is great danger with fireworks especially illegal ones, the Cedar Lake Fire Department is strongly encouraging residents to refrain from lighting off fireworks especially illegal ones as they can and have caused critical if not fatal injury. The area is also extremely dry and fireworks can cause fires. There are many local fireworks shows that are performed by professionals in a controlled environment that residents can attend instead of attempting fireworks displays on their own.
