Two area communities could see the loss of Amtrak service four days a week, between Chicago and Indianapolis, starting next October. According to the Times, a funding subsidy issue between Amtrak and the state, could derail service in Dyer and Rensselaer, unless an agreement can be made. The problem is a new rule is keeping Amtrak from using their federal operating grant for short routes, a category which Indiana falls into. However, a long distance train that runs three-days a week through Dyer and Rensselaer would continue. Last year, over 24-hundred people utilized Amtrak in Dyer, while just over two-thousand used the Rensselaer station.
