By a nine-to-two vote today the Indiana Board of Education has changed the eligibility requirements to be a teacher or principal. The Times reports a new “adjunct teacher permit” allows anyone with a bachelor's degree with a 3.0 grade point average, who can pass a subject test, can immediately teach that subject, and that a bachelor's degree will now suffice to be a principal in Indiana, along with at least two-years teaching experience and completion of a training program in administration. Published reports say proponents of the new rules say the change allows schools to be more flexible when hiring, while opponents say students will suffer as a result.
