Region fire departments have been sending their condolences via Facebook this midday after word that two firefighters were shot and killed in Webster, New York, this morning while responding to a fire. Here is more information from ABC:

Two firefighters have been killed in action in Western New York. ABC's Aaron Katersky tells us they were shot while responding to a house fire. Firefighters were responding to a call near the Lake Ontario shore in Webster, New York, ABC News reports, when police chief Gerald Pickering says they confronted flames and bullets, and when they pulled up on the scene were, started receiving, were fired upon by one or more shooters. Four firefighters were shot, and two died. People who live nearby were evacuated while authorities secured the scene so firefighters could extinguish the flames which spread during the gunfire, Katersky reports.
