Region Remembers 9/11, Flags at Half-Staff

Communities around the Region are holding ceremonies today (Wed Sep 11) to remember the victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The City of Gary was hosting its annual September 11th Commemoration Ceremony on the steps of Gary City Hall, 401 Broadway, at 8am, with a performance by the Wirt-Emerson Choir. Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson, councilman-at-Large Ronald Brewer. Police Chief Wade Ingram, Fire Chief Teresa Everett and members of the Gary Police and Fire Departments are among those attending, and the public is invited. 
The public is also invited to Foundation Meadows Park in Valparaiso, 3210 Campbell Street, for the city's annual 9-11 ceremony beginning at 9am. The ceremony will include speakers Mayor Jon Costas, Chief of Police Michael Brickner and Director of Parks and Recreation John Seibert.  Chaplain Bill Wrede will be this year’s guest speaker. Chaplain Wrede stood four blocks from the site of the World Trade Center offering pastoral care to first responders after the collapse of the towers. He stood near Ground Zero blessing first responders as they entered the area shortly after the collapse.  Members of the Valparaiso Fire and Police Departments will also be attending the ceremony.
This evening in Schererville, the town will officially unveil a beam from the World Trade Center that's been installed at the town's 9-11 Memorial, which is near the Schererville Police Station on East Joliet Street.  The public is invited and the ceremony is scheduled to begin at 6 pm.
Indiana Governor Mike Pence is directing flags at state facilities statewide be flown at half-staff Wednesday, September 11 in honor of Patriot Day.  Flags should remain at half-staff until close of business Wednesday or the morning of Thursday, September 12.  Governor Pence also asks businesses and residents across the state to lower their flags to half-staff to pay tribute to the men and women who were injured or lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
