Thousands of well-known visitors to the Region are flying through now. From 2,000 to over 30,000 — that’s how the population of the migrating Sandhill Cranes has grown at their well-known stop in Northwest Indiana over the past several weeks. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says staff at Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife area make weekly crane counts during the park fall migration from October through the end of December. The first in early October was 2,069; last week the number was over 31,000, jumping from about 7,200 the week before. The next count was over 24,000, and the most recent was back up to over 31,000. Here’s a YouTube link to view a special Indiana DNR video about their annual visit.
