Region residents are invited to join Save the Dunes for their third installment of our Barker Seasonal Forum: Winter Stroll & Seminar, on the early history of Save the Dunes, with Westchester Township History Museum Curator, Serena Ard. Meet Save the Dunes Community Engagement Coordinator Em Racine at the Barker House in Michigan City on Wednesday February 28, 2024, at 4:30 pm for a winter stroll in Barker Woods (managed by Shirley Heinze Land Trust) for a short walk (0.78 miles, flat) to hear history of the Barker House and how it became the headquarters of Save the Dunes. Then, everyone will go indoors and see everyone else online (tune in via Facebook Live on Save the Dunes page) at 5:15 pm with Ard as she covers the history of the Prairie Club including the first efforts for a national park, the creation of the Indiana Dunes State Park, and the ways those events led to the founding of Save the Dunes. The last half of Serena’s presentation will cover aspects of women’s history, showing how women in early conservation played major roles in creating the state and national parks and Save the Dunes, a news release said. The event is free and open to the public.
