In Gary, Mayor Eddie Melton says a FedEx warehousing and distribution facility is coming to the city, expected to open in 2027. Mayor Melton made the announcement in his State of the City address, adding the facility is expected to create about 600 jobs, with a hiring goal of 20% of those positions are offered to Gary residents. Mayor Melton also announced that in 2026, Rieth-Riley Construction would again donate their time and expertise to demolish 100 abandoned homes in a period of just 10 days, clearing the way for new development. Community support services are also expanding with the development of the Tolleston Opportunity Campus, set to open in 2026. In a news release, the city said the multi-agency partnership includes YMCA Crossroads, Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Northwest Indiana, Methodist Hospital, and the Dean and Barbara White Family Foundation and the campus will serve as a critical space for youth development, wellness, and community engagement.
