In Lake County, Indiana Governor Mike Braun was in Crown Point Friday July 11, 2025, to ceremonially sign a new bill that begins the process of possibly ending vehicle emissions testing in the Region. Governor Braun was joined by the commissioner of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) and a delegation of local state lawmakers. Lake and Porter counties are the only two in the state where the procedure is required every two years to comply with federal clean air standards. The measure directs IDEM to evaluate air quality in any nonattainment area, officials say, and identify strategies with regard to the Clean Air Act to move the areas off the list.
