Shirley Heinze Land Trust says it now protects more than 4,000 acres of land in northwest Indiana. The nonprofit says the milestone follows the recent acquisition of property in rural Starke County. A news release says the preserve encompasses over 425 acres of land, with black oak dominated sand savanna, sand prairie, emergent marsh, riparian habitat, and woodlands. Funding was provided by the Next Level Conservation Trust, which Shirley Heinze says is the largest single infusion of state dollars into conservation in Indiana’s history. The program provides a match of funding to support the acquisition of land that’s protected for conservation in perpetuity. Here is a link for more information on Shirley Heinze Land Trust .
