The National Weather Service Chicago says several rounds of heavy rainfall have moved across the Region since Monday August 18, 2025, and significant flash flooding occurred in some areas including Whiting. Meteorologists say there were pockets of four to locally eight inches of rain that fell between the Interstate 80 and Interstate 88 corridors, according to an update at the Chicago National Weather Service website, in “another round of torrential-rain producing thunderstorms”. A Flood Warning was in effect for northern Lake County this morning Tuesday August 19, 2025, and elsewhere in northwest Indiana, flood advisories were in effect for northern Porter and La Porte counties. In Lake County, an alert Monday night Tuesday August 18, 2025 of major flooding throughout East Chicago and Whiting especially Indianapolis Boulevard from 120th to 129th and the areas of Dickey and Riley roads. The alert shortly after 10pm said there was up to three feet of water and urged everyone to not drive across flooded roadways. A Flash Flood Warning was in effect for about an hour overnight around 2am Tuesday August 19, 2025 for northern Lake County, with radar indicated anticipated rainfall rates of two-to-three inches in one hour, the National Weather Service Chicago said.
In a social media post early this morning Tuesday August 19 2025, the National Weather Service Chicago said after last night’s strong storms, “there is a lot of standing water in low-lying ditches, fields, and even roadways this morning. Many rivers, creeks, and streams are also running near or above bank full this morning,” and meteorologists urged everyone to be mindful if you like to walk, hike, run, or bike along river trails.
