Indiana Landmarks recently announced its Sacred Places Indiana Fund is awarding $2.4 million to congregations across the state to address significant capital needs at their historic houses of worship, including two in northwest Indiana. The Diocese of Gary will receive $400,000 to tuckpoint masonry at the 1950 Cathedral of the Holy Angels on Tyler Street in downtown Gary. The cathedral is the seat of the Gary Diocese. Valparaiso University will get $300,000 to repair the slab floor and foundation in the sanctuary of its Chapel of the Resurrection, dedicated in 1959. VU says the Chapel of the Resurrection was designed by Charles Edward Stade, the architect of several buildings on campus, including O.P. Kretzmann Hall, the Gellerson Center, and the Neils Science Center. In November 2021, the chapel was added to the National Register of Historic Places. “This work is not only about maintaining a facility, it’s about safeguarding a space that embodies Valparaiso University’s mission and ensuring it continues to serve future generations at its highest standard,” Jason Kutch, M.S., P.E., executive director of facilities at Valparaiso University said in a news release. “The Chapel stands at the center of campus life spiritually, architecturally, and as a gathering place for our community. Proactively investing in its upkeep ensures the integrity and longevity of its systems and finishes, allowing us to prevent further deterioration and costly repairs in the future.” Indiana Landmarks said selected congregations must be ready to undertake and complete both a capital campaign and construction project within the next two years.
