In northwest Indiana, Region motorists were impacted by a snow squall during the morning commute Wednesday January 14, 2026. The National Weather Service Chicago says one of the peak wind gusts during Wednesday morning’s snow squall January 14, 2026, was measured in northwest Indiana, 58 miles-per-hour in Lake Station. Meteorologists say the weather event led to dangerous travel conditions across the Region as the snow squall quickly traveled southward during the morning commute. Snow Squall Warnings were issued for several counties in northwest Indiana and northeast Illinois. At their website, the National Weather Service Chicago office said a snow squall is the “wintertime equivalent of a line of summer storms” – a combination of intense, limited duration snowfall with very low visibility, falling temperatures, and strong gusty winds. The weather service also said the warnings often send out Wireless Emergency Alerts on smartphones, to inform motorists or those about to travel of the impending danger.
