Ports of Indiana says it has joined an unprecedented partnership to expand shipments between the nation’s two busiest inland shipping channels. The American Great Lakes Ports Association, including members Ports of Indiana, the Illinois International Port District, and Port Milwaukee, in partnership with the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation, announced this week they will begin a market analysis toward expanding cargo movement between the Great Lakes and Inland Waterways system. Together, officials say nearly 700 million tons of cargo move through each year, supporting various industries like steelmaking and others, but only a small percentage of cargo moves between the Great Lakes and inland rivers.
