The National Weather Service (NWS) Chicago at its website says a single supercell thunderstorm “was responsible for a family of tornadoes” that struck northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana the evening of Tuesday March 10, 2026. The NWS Chicago office said preliminary ratings show an EF-3 tornado with a path of over 36 miles from southern Kankakee and Aroma Park in Illinois to Lake Village and Roselawn, Indiana, ending west of DeMotte, and an EF-1 tornado touched down southwest of Wheatfield. At least two additional tornadoes have also been documented in the NWS Chicago area, the latest update said, and analysis was ongoing. Officials report three deaths from the first tornado, one in Illinois and two in Indiana. The National Weather Service Northern Indiana says a National Weather Service (NWS) storm survey confirmed an EF-2 tornado in Starke County, from near U.S. 421 moving northeast ending near Knox. The National Weather Service Chicago also said these storms also produced “exceptionally large hail”. One hailstone with a diameter of over six-inches in Kankakee was in the process of being considered as possibly setting a new Illinois state record, the previous record being a 4.75-inch hailstone in Minooka in June 2015.
